Cocktail or Mocktail for Waitrose Drinks
During lockdown when the pubs and restaurants closed, many of us shifted to working from home, millions of parents started home-schooling their children, and sales of alcohol spiked and at the same time many people stopped drinking totally as alcohol. became just too accessible. So, this was a perfectly timed feature as it gave every one the perfect excuse for a non-alcoholic tipple. Being alcohol free is a life choice and one that many are choosing, and so it is super brilliant that they are such a such a trend now.
The brief was to shoot graphic, angular and dramatic cocktails and mocktails. Each final and magnificent drink was created out of two versions of the same cocktail one half of which was alcoholic and the other half non-alcoholic. As they met in the middle of the glass everything about each cocktail had to be very carefully considered to make this successful- painstaking precision was required.
The large pieces of ice were ideal to help create the cool beaded look of condensation on the glass the last shot of the day which was the expresso martini which was the most challenging as it was necessary to balance a coffee bean on a very thin layer of froth. Tricks of the trade came in very handy as it certainly wasn’t as easy as it looks!
Behind the scenes making cocktails and spherical ice
Limited pics of me as I am busy taking them!
Kostas Stavrinos beautifully styled all the drink stylist on this shoot for Waitrose Drinks. He painstakingly hand carved spherical balls of ice from a humungous slab of ice which was mesmerising and to my eye looked pretty dangerous.
